You might have observed that vehicles plying on Indian roads have different kinds of number plates. Under the Motors Vehicle Act 1988, vehicle number plates are issued by the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) of each state, with the colours of the plate depicting the type of usage of the vehicle or the status of its occupant.
Here are all the different types of number plates in India authorised by Indian RTOs under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways:
These number plates with black lettering indicate that the vehicle is used by private owners for their own usage. Such vehicles cannot be used for commercial purposes.
Vehicles with yellow number plates having black lettering are meant to be used solely for commercial purposes and require a special driving permit from the RTO.
A vehicle with a green number plate having white lettering indicates that it is an Electric Vehicle (EV), and this is common for both private and commercial vehicles.
Black number plates with yellow lettering suggest that the vehicle is registered for commercial purposes but is used as a self-drive vehicle by multiple users. These number plates in India are also seen on fleet vehicles used for commercial purposes or ferrying people.
A red number plate with white letters is essentially a temporary vehicle registration plate issued for one month by the RTO. However, some states do not allow such temporary registration number plates for use on the road.
A blue car number plate with white lettering means the vehicle is used by foreign diplomats. These types of number plates in India use codes like CC (consular corps), DC (diplomatic corps), and UN (United Nations), along with the country code in the form of digits.
7. Number plate with an up arrow:
All the vehicles used by the Ministry of Defence, including those used by armed forces, have black number plates. These types of number plates in India feature an upward-pointing arrow, a two-digit number indicating the year in which the vehicle was procured, a base code, a serial number, and a letter indicating the class of the vehicle.
8. Red number plate with embossed Indian emblem:
This kind of number plate is meant to be used only by the President of India or the state governors. This red-coloured car number plate features a golden emblem of India.
